In “The Careless Language of Sexual Violence,” Roxane Gay examines how casual language is used to diminish the violence of the crime of rape. At the end of the essay, Gay calls for writers to find ways to restore the violence to rape and to make it impossible for men to be excused for committing such a crime. Mary Gaitskill’s short story “The Girl on the Plane” follows a character, John Morton, who talks about sexual assault casually. Using Gay’s essay, write an essay in which you analyze how Gaitskill uses Morton’s thoughts and casual language to successfully answer Gay’s call to action.
