Unit 5 Discussion 2

The audience I wish to persuade would be between the ages of 12-80. I know it
seems like the entire human race however my product is art. Art is ageless and appeals to
everyone in many ways. Persuasion in my opinion is a strong word and almost sounds
like manipulate. Nonetheless I would love to persuade a wide range of an audience
through various forms of art. From furniture, to paintings, to murals many without even
knowing it accept art. In other words when people pick out simple shower curtains or a
plate set they are picking something that appeals to them and to me that is art.
Beginning with sharing emotion and the connection it has to the art. I would talk
to the audience about when and where my art began for me. I would speak about the
experiences behind the actions that first put pencil to paper and led me to where I am now
and the passion I put into every piece of art. This dialogue would more than likely be the
most personal of the three since my emotional experiences are very tragic. I would want
to the audience to accept this connection and carry it with them as the look at the art. The
novel portion is something that can also be very exciting to discuss with the audience.
When it comes to art the first thing most may think of tools used would be paint brushes
and acrylic or oil paint. However what I use is spray paint and paint markers. Although
these specific tools have been around for decades their uses have grown tremendously
over the years. The things an artist can do with spray paint today compared to ten or 20
years ago is amazing. Most may think that graffiti is just tagging and or ruining property
but it is a culture. It is an art that unbelievably takes talent, concentration, focus and for
many of dedication. This type of dedication changes lives because coming from the
Bronx or the inner cities like many other graffiti artists this culture is an escape from the
reality of tragic neighborhoods. Finally we come to leaving a lasting memory with the
audience. An Art piece is meant to be displayed for people to appreciate. Whether it is
just one person or multiple people viewing the art it should be viewed. Leaving a lasting
memory for the audience in my opinion is giving them an idea of how art can be
displayed and how it can look in the most unexpected locations. Some in the audience
may think to themselves “this is amazing but it will not look good in my home” and this
is where we give them an insight into how it will look good. Leaving that memory and
giving them that image of how it can be displayed will excite them and make them more
interested in trying something new.
In order to ensure that the passion that was created is contagious I would have pop
up galleries. These galleries would be monthly at different locations and would give
those attended the first time a chance to bring someone new. I believe that there is no
point in doing something once and stopping there. This is big with music especially with
rap or hip-hop. I always read about fans getting upset and calling other artists sell-outs
when their music reaches a different genre. However isn’t that the goal? For our art to
reach everyone and grow the culture and its audience.

My previous employer had an annual traditional of putting on a “business retreat”
every year where we discussed business practices and goals. One of my goals was to
increase our clientele that year by 15 households. This was very challenging for me
because at that point I didn’t view myself as being creative enough to come up with
ideas. One of the many ways I proceeded with this goal was getting the company on
social media, then included the links on client letters along with our website and updated
business cards. I thought of every possible way to expose the organization. Our website
was also not mobile friendly, so I took on the project to make it mobile friendly while
also updating the content to give it a more modern appeal. I also joined the Chamber of
Commerce, by getting involved in the community gave us a lot of exposure. The
audience we were trying to reach was potential clients, typically baby boomers or
retirees.
One of the best things I did to accomplish this goal was attending the Chamber of
Commerce weekly, because I could meet people face-to-face and build relationships.
This established trust and they could see the passion I had for the business, this fit the
emotional piece. Every week you would hear the same 1 minute commercial from each
business. My novel catch was to impress the audience, I put together a catchy slogan I
used when I had to get up in front of 50+ people weekly and present on the organization.
There were 5 other financial advisors in the Chamber, our organization gained 10+ new
clients from the Chamber. I’m sure my novel idea caught attention and was memorable
for many of them, but I give most of the credit to the emotional aspect because building
relationships and getting to know others is what makes them feel valued and builds trust.
