Assignment Instructions:

Prewriting

Task 1: Find a commercial on youtube. Choose a commercial that has a lot of discriptive qualities (colors, sounds, people, backgrounds, imagery, etc.). Avoid choosing ads that break FCC rules or ads that break academic integrity. However, be creative with what you choose. Your advertisements don’t have to be current or from the United States.

Task 2: Complete a brainstorm based on the following questions. Remember more description is better:

  1. What is the purpose of the commercial, and how do you know the purpose? (choose one or more of these purposes to describe and explain–inform, entertain, persuade, or remind).
  2. What colors, shapes, words, and pictures, stand out, and how do these items appeal to any or all of the five senses? (sensory details)
  3. Who is included in the target audience, and how do you know? (look at the people in the commercial, the product, the background or setting, and consider the script to determine as many demographical characteristics as you can)
  4. What changes could be made to make the commercial better? How would change or enhance the purpose, sensory details, and target audience?

Task 3: Create a cluster based on your brainstorms of the purpose, sensory details, target audience, and changes. Use bubbl.us. Look at the sample cluster and commercial.

Task 4: Write your recommendation and post it to the correct discussion. Use the samples to help you. However, do not copy the samples.

Drafting

Task 5: Format a memo with the following sections in the following order. Be sure to refer to the sample Memo Format to know how to format correctly.

  1. Recommendation- one paragraph
  2. Purpose and Advertisement Description- two to four paragraphs (describe the purpose and give a thumbnail description, which means that your boss, the marketing director, should be able to visualize the commercial without seeing it).
  3. Target Audience- one or two paragraphs (describe who the commercial is targeting based on demographical characteristics that you perceived from the people in the commercial, the product, the background or setting, and the script).
  4. Changes- three paragraphs (describe clear examples of the changes that you would make to the purpose, sensory details, and target audience).
