Humanism – Good Answers

Humanism was the central ideology that motivated Renaissance society, but Renaissance humanism has a different connotation than modern humanism. In the Renaissance, a humanist, or umanista, was foremost an independent scholar of what we might term the humanities, which were grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy, and history, with a particular emphasis on classical scholarship, but eventually included the vernacular Italian literary world, as well. Humanists were, in fact, antithetical to the scholastic subjects taught at the universities and were critical of the Aristotelianism common there, preferring Platonism, instead.

Humanism and humanists played a major role in the development of the Renaissance in Italy, and their roles differed depending on whether a humanist worked in Florence, Rome, or Venice, for example.
