Dear Individual s Name (use last name and use Ms. or Mr. or full name if you don t know the gender of the

person):

State the position or type of work for which you are applying, and how you learned about the opening. Use a

sentence like this: “The position for Marketing Assistant advertised in the November 5 edition of the Dayton Daily News seems perfect for someone with my qualifications.” (Put the names of publications­­newspapers­­in italics.) Next, add a sentence or two summarizing these qualifications. You might use sentences like these: “I

worked in telemarketing and retail for two years. I have also completed 24 hours in Business Management at

Sinclair Community College with a grade point average of 3.80.”

The second paragraph should elaborate more on your qualifications and on what you can do for the employer. If

you are a recent graduate, explain how your academic background makes you a qualified candidate for the

position. If you have some practical work experience, point out the specific achievements or your unique qualifications. However, do not repeat your entire resume.

In the third and final paragraph, state your resume is enclosed. Close the letter with a statement that will

encourage a response. State specific times and dates that you are available to interview; try to be as flexible as

possible. Avoid sentences like “I would love to work for you,” or “I am so excited about….” and so forth.
