Overview of the Assignment

You will have about two weeks to complete this entire assignment. This one is worth 25 points.

Letter Assignment Part #1

I would like you to write a letter of about seven-nine paragraphs or so to a student who is taking an online course for the first time. The example is the booklet gives you a basic idea of what to do. It isn’t the exact letter.

What I would like you to do is help guide this student through a semester in an online course. Focus on these topics:

· becoming familiar with the blackboard.com site

· using the discussion board and other interactive features

· working on your own, rather than being in a classroom

· giving an overview of the benefits of an online course (you should list them in a bulleted format as this student does in the red booklet example)

· mentioning the drawbacks of an online course (you should also list those)

· interacting with your instructor and your classmates; and, learning to ask questions when you are confused about an assignment (advise this student not to wait too long to ask a question).

Your letter can be about two pages long. You can open it with

Dear WCCC Online Student,

In your introduction, state how many online classes you have taken, and also indicate your overall opinion of them (positive, negative, or mixed). In this letter, you can use “I” and you don’t need to use “We” as this student did in the sample assignments. Make sure to start your paragraphs off with a clear topic sentence, and try to express an opinion or “attitude” as you open each paragraph. In each paragraph, focus on one topic mentioned above. You just need three-four sentences for each paragraph.

At the end of each paragraph, make sure to add a concluding sentence. Just start more what you are stressing. You can use phrases like, “I clearly believe,” “There is no question,” “Without a doubt,” “I am certain,” etc. Just try to emphasize your thoughts.

After your introduction, you can use either six or seven short paragraphs. You can actually combine the last two topics mentioned above into one paragraph focusing on interacting with your instructor & other students in the class, and asking questions promptly.

In your conclusion, indicate that you hope that you have given a clear overview. Wish them luck with their online class. Encourage them to stay focused for the entire semester.

You will sign with,

Sincerely,

Your Name
